It is very important that you contact your child’s school staff in order to monitor your child’s progress. Without knowing how he or she is performing or behaving in school, you will never be able to prepare your child for success. So always feel free to contact school staff because it is their responsibility to give you all of the information that you need about your child. Also, great teachers appreciate parents who are interested in knowing how their child is performing in school.
Most importantly, your child always needs an advocate. He or she needs you to speak for him or her when it comes to addressing certain issues with adults. Always check with your child to ensure that he or she is truly being heard by school staff. Most times, children seriously need you to listen to their frustrations, concerns and questions about their academic experiences. There’s always two sides to a story, so be sure to support your child in the best way that you can. Most times it’s simply a misunderstanding or miscommunication between student and staff. Listen to your child!

A PERSONAL STORY from Naomi:
“When I was in school, we didn’t have this type of technology to help our parents contact our teachers. So whenever I had a concern about an assignment or a teacher, my mom made sure to call my school to request a meeting with that particular teacher. And if they didn’t respond within 2 days, she would send me to school with a note from her to give to my teacher. It never failed that the teacher took to heart whatever my mother talked with him or her about, whether it was in a meeting or by a hand written note. I always felt really at peace knowing that my mother was there to protect me and to take care of issues so that I could concentrate mainly on doing my best in class. Thanks Mommy!!”
